Match Preview

The Chicago Red Stars take on New Jersey/New York Gotham FC in the team’s first match of the group stage of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) X Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup. In this first iteration of the tournament, the Red Stars will look to continue their momentum from the regular season that saw Chicago enter the summer break with back-to-back wins.

What is Summer Cup?
This weekend the NWSL and Liga MX will kick off the 2024 Summer Cup, the first interleague competition between the two North American Leagues. The tournament features all 14 NWSL clubs, plus the six Liga MX Femenil clubs that ended the 2023/24 season with the most points. All 20 teams are divided into five groups with the top four clubs with the most points after the group stage advancing to the semifinal round. Group matches kick off July 19, and the semifinals will be held August 6, at CPKC Stadium. The winners of the semifinal matches advance to the championship match Friday, October 25, which will be played at Toyota Field in San Antonio. The Red Stars find themselves in Group D, meaning that they will have to take on the respective third and fourth place Washington Spirit and NJ/NY Gotham FC of the NWSL and Chivas de Guadalajara, who finished third in the Liga MX Femenil Apertura.
First Up, Gotham FC
For the opening match of the Summer Cup, Chicago will take on the reigning NWSL Champions, Gotham FC. While this will be the second official meeting between the two clubs this year, both sides will be without significant help from their national team players as they prepare for the upcoming Summer Olympics. Gotham will be without Ann-Katrin Berger (GER), Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn, Rose Lavelle, Jenna Nighswonger and Emily Sonnett (USA), while the Red Stars will be without Alyssa Naeher and Mallory Swanson (USA). The Red Stars will also be without their newly-signed midfielder, Julia Grosso, who will be with Canada’s Olympic team. Regardless, the teams will feature exciting players like Kelley O'Hara, Ella Stevens and Esther González for Gotham and Penelope Hocking, Sam Staab and Ally Schlegel for the Red Stars. In their last meeting, May 19, Chicago just missed out on earning a draw at Red Bull Arena in a 2-1 loss.
Time to Shine
With the Red Stars missing significant help from their national team players, Summer Cup will be a great time to exhibit the talents of players that have not seen the pitch much this season. Goalkeeper Mackenzie Wood filled in for Alyssa Naeher for three matches this season while Naeher recovered from an injury, including in the club’s first match against Gotham FC. Over those three matches, Wood made eight saves and helped the team earn a win against Utah. In the third match that Wood tended goal for the Red Stars, the Granger, Indiana, native put up a 75% save percentage and an 86.8 pass percentage, both highs for the second-year keeper. Ally Cook, an undrafted rookie that earned a spot on the team in the preseason, has also seen some playing time during the regular season, but with Mallory Swanson at the Olympics, we could see Cook step into a more regular rotation for the Summer Cup. Cook appeared in 11 of 16 regular-season matches, with only one start on the season, but does have an assist on an Ava Cook goal in the opening match of the season. Another Red Star that could rotate into the starting lineup during the Summer Cup is Chardonnay Curran. The first-year Red Star featured in six of the team’s regular-season matches and has entered matches as a midfielder and defender, but regardless of position, has brought energy off the bench to the team. Whoever features for the Red Stars, you can bet the players will be eager to get onto the pitch and get back to playing competitive soccer after a week off.

Chicago Red Stars Drop Opening Match of Summer Cup to Gotham FC in Penalty Kicks

Despite a number of chances at goal, it took more than 90 minutes to determine a winner in today’s contest between the Chicago Red Stars and New Jersey/New York Gotham FC. Following regulation, the two sides went to penalty kicks where Gotham converted all five attempts and walked away with one point in the group standings. Chicago will have to rest and recover quickly before taking on Liga MX Femenil team, Chivas de Guadalajara, Friday, July 26, at SeatGeek Stadium.

KEY MOMENTS:

19’ Chicago’s Mackenzie Wood launches the ball downfield, finding the head of Chicago midfielder Bea Franklin. In a crowded midfield, Franklin wins the header, flicking a threw ball to charging Penelope Hocking. Hocking leaves three scrambling defenders in her wake for a 1v1 with Gotham’s keeper, Cassie Miller. Hocking gets a shot off, but Miller gets big and blocks the shot.

30’ Gotham midfielder Yazmeen Ryan tees up for a free kick just outside Chicago’s 18-yard box. She fires the ball, beating Chicago’s four-person wall. Ryan’s strike hits the right post and spins across the face of Chicago’s goal line, before going out of play.

35’ Gotham’s Stevens creates a pocket of space on her right side for a shot, and strikes a low, fast ball. Chicago’s Mackenzie Wood is quick to the ground and shuts down the play.

42’ Chicago’s Sam Stabb zips a ball across the midfield, finding a wide-open Jenna Bike on the right side of Gotham’s defensive third. Bike is technical with the ball, setting herself up for a strike that shakes the right post, saving Gotham from conceding a goal before the half.

48’ Chicago’s Camryn Biegalski flies past a Gotham defender and slides the ball inside the 18-yeard box to the feet of Sam Stabb who cracks the ball with her left foot, sending it curling towards Gotham’s goal. Cassie Miller is quick to block and catch the shot, shutting down the play.

57’ Penelope Hocking receives the ball just past the midline, turning and carrying it with speed down the field. She zips by a defender and strikes the ball at Gotham’s goal, but Miller makes the save.

85’ Gotham’s Mandy Freeman floats the ball into Chicago’s 18-yard box. A deflection lands the ball at the feet of Gotham’s Katie Stengel for a 1v1 with Wood. With an aggressive slide, Wood takes control of the ball and ends the attack.

87’ Chicago’s Jenna Bike sprints at Gotham’s last defender with the ball at her feet, and with a messy tackle, Gotham’s Maitane Lopez takes out Bike, drawing a red card from the referee.

91’ Chicago’s Jameese Joseph dances around a defender and missiles the ball towards Gotham’s goal from outside the 18-yard box, but just misses over the cross bar

94’ Chicago’s Jameese Joseph carries the ball the entire length of the field, racing like a runaway train before taking another shot at goal, but is unable to get it past Miller.

GAME NOTES:

  • Sam Staab had a well-rounded performance for the Red Stars ranking in the top five in chances created (3), shots (1), passes completed (32), tackles won (2) and recoveries (6)
  • Jenna Bike was key for the Red Stars on offense. The forward took two shots, with one ricocheting off the post, had .32 expected goals and disrupted Gotham’s backline by making several key runs, including one that forced a red card for Maitane López
