Bay in the Bullpen
California club Bay FC will be stepping up to the plate in the Windy City for the first time, but the expansion side is hardly an unknown foe. The Red Stars will face off with Bay for the second time just over a month after taking the pitch in San Jose May 5. Chicago left the West Coast with three points in hand following the 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Bay FC, but a lot has changed since that match. Bay FC was notably lacking forward Asisat Oshoala in the club’s first meeting with the Red Stars and the Nigerian international’s absence was felt. The upcoming June 8 match against Bay FC will also be a homecoming for Naperville native and former Red Star, Kayla Sharples. Being welcomed home under the bright Wrigley Field lights will undoubtedly be special.
Record Breaking at Wrigley Field
The Red Stars are on deck and bringing a whole new type of ball game to the iconic Wrigley Field. Following 12,000 tickets sold in the first hours, outselling the capacity of SeatGeek Stadium, the Red Stars’ home venue, and surpassing the club attendance record in tickets sold, the Red Stars Take Over Wrigley Field match is absolutely historic. The first professional women’s sporting event at Wrigley Field in over 80 years has been building excitement since its announcement, receiving endorsement from sports legends like Billie Jean King and more. The week leading up to the match, Red Stars were out encouraging fans to attend the match at the Friendly Confines to break the NWSL attendance record. Hannah Anderson, Julia Bianchi, Chardonnay Curran, Shea Groom, Jameese Joseph and Taylor Malham all accompanied a boat packed with Red Stars equipment up the Chicago River to Wrigley Field June 2. Tatumn Milazzo threw out the honorary first pitch in the first game of the Crosstown Series June 4. Additionally, Cari Roccaro and Ally Schlegel stopped by the Red Stars takeover of Murphy’s Bleachers to guest bartend June 5. With Chicago’s excitement mounting, the first NWSL game at Wrigley Field June 8 could be the event of the summer.
International Shining Stars
The May/June international window gave Red Stars fans much to cheer for. Highlighting the four Red Stars representing their countries is defender, Sam Staab, who received her first national team call up for the United States. The three-time NWSL Ironwoman also recorded her first cap for the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) June 2 before earning her first international start June 4. Sparkling alongside Staab was teammate and veteran USWNT forward, Mallory Swanson. June 2 was a standout match for Swanson in her home state of Colorado, where her family supported her in the stands while the Red Star recorded a brace and an assist in the USWNT’s 4-0 shutout over Korea Republic. Red Stars Natalia Kuikka and Sydney Schneider also represented Finland and Jamaica, respectively. Defender Kuikka recorded starts in both Finland’s May 31 and June 2 matches against the Netherlands, while Schneider tended goal in Jamaica’s June 4 match against Brazil.
