Match Preview

The Chicago Red Stars (3-31, 10 pts) head to San Francisco hungry for a win following back-to-back losses at home. The Red Stars meet expansion side Bay FC (2-5-0, 6 pts) for the first time as Bay look to break their own three-match losing streak.

First Time Foes, Familiar Field
Expansion side Bay FC host the Red Stars for their first meeting of the season. With recent history favoring California expansion teams, Chicago heads to Bay in hopes of turning their luck around. In 2022, Chicago lost to both Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC in their first encounters. After falling one more time to San Diego in March of 2023, Chicago has gone undefeated against California teams (2W, 1D). Meanwhile, all three Bay FC home matches at PayPal Park have reached full time with a 3-2 scoreline, with Bay on the losing end in two of those three. Additionally, Chicago sits sixth on the NWSL table while Bay FC falls tenth and the West Coast club has yet to record a win against any club ranked higher on the table when they face off. Which trend will prevail at the end of Week 7?
Well Matched
The Red Stars and Bay have strikingly similar statistics so far in 2024, save the scoring in matches. Bay FC have scored more goals (12) than Chicago (9), but they have also conceded more goals (17) than any other NWSL team, including the Red Stars (10). The team’s conceding struggles have led to a worse record for Bay (2-5-0) than Chicago’s 3-3-1. However, both sides each have one clean sheet on the season and similar figures in shots on goal (Bay with 33 to the Red Stars’ 28), assists (8 to 6), conversion rate (16.00 percent to 16.07 percent), tackles won (96 to 81) and duels won (335 to 338). Both teams are sure to be eager to break the close race and claim the first victory in the club’s head-to-head history together.
Air Schlegel
Just seven weeks into the 2024 NWSL season, forward Ally Schlegel has won 21 aerial duels, more than doubling any other Red Star’s aerial duels won. In just her second season, Schlegel’s dominance in the air ranks her third in the league, only behind league veterans Bethany Balcer (25) and Sydney Leroux (23). Schlegel also leads the Red Stars in goals scored with a team-high 1.91 expected goals from 10 shots. Additionally, the Parker, Colorado, native has already exponentially outperformed herself when analyzing her rookie campaign. It took Schlegel double the time (14 appearances) to record 2 goals and 1 assist in 2023 and the rookie won just 12 aerial duels that season. Talk about growth.

Chicago Red Stars Beat Bay FC, 1-2

In their first meeting of the season, the Chicago Red Stars took down expansion side Bay FC, 1-2, behind goals from Penelope Hocking and Ally Schlegel. The Red Stars will see Bay FC one more time this season, June 8, at Wrigley Field for the first NWSL match at the Friendly Confines.

KEY MOMENTS:

7’ Chicago’s Alyssa Naeher, trying to clear the ball from Chicago’s 18-yard box, kicks the ball at a Bay FC forward, the ball hits the forward and is redirected into Chicago’s goal to give Bay FC the lead, 1-0 Bay FC

10’ Chicago’s Ally Schlegel wins a header and with a flick sends the ball to forward, Penelope Hocking, who in turn holds play before sending a through ball to Mallory Swanson who takes a left footed shot that’s saved by the keeper

30’ Sam Staab sends a long ball from Chicago territory behind Bay FC’s back line that finds Penelope Hocking on a run, the forward takes two touches and a shot that evens the score, 1-1

63’ Jameese Joseph takes a shot that is blocked by the body of a Bay FC defender, but like last match, Ally Schlegel claims the rebound and takes a shot that roles past the keeper and gives Chicago the lead, 1-2 Chicago

70’ Taylor Malham runs from her defensive position to steal the ball from Bay FC. She then finds Mallory Swanson on the left side of Bay’s 18-yard box. Swanson sends a low cross in that finds Penelope Hocking, but Hocking’s shot goes wide of the goal, 1-2 Chicago

79’ Swanson sends a through ball to Hocking, she dribbles past a Bay FC defender, cuts back and is fouled in the box for a penalty. Mallory Swanson steps up to take the attempt, but is denied by Bay’s keeper.

  • Chicago Red Stars have won four points from losing positions in the National Womens Soccer League this season, only Kansas City Current (6) and Washington Spirit (6) have recovered more.
  • This is Chicago’s first come-from-behind win this season.
