What to watch for in tonight’s Grand Final

A look at the storylines ahead of Australia’s biggest game

CHICAGO – Tonight the Westfield W-League culminates with the Grand Final between Perth Glory and Sydney FC. With plenty of Chicago Red Stars in action, there are plenty of storylines for fans to keep an eye on.

The Battle of the Red Stars

A Chicago Red Stars player is guaranteed to walk away as champion. Sam Kerr, Katie Naughton, Alyssa Mautz, and Nikki Stanton will wear the Perth Glory colors while Danielle Colaprico represents Sydney FC. It’s one of the rare occasions fans can see their favorite Chicago players battle against each other and the prospect of seeing Colaprico’s defensive unit attempt to contain an attack featuring Kerr and Mautz will be very entertaining.

The Sam Kerr Show

Speaking of Kerr’s attack, the Aussie has continued to get on the scoresheet in the W-League. She won the Golden Boot, scoring 13 goals in 11 games. Then in the semifinals against Melbourne Victory, Kerr scored a hat-trick, the first ever in Finals Series history to do so. Both Sydney and Perth faced off earlier this season, with Kerr scoring twice to lead her team to victory. With one game separating Kerr from a winner’s medal, the eyes of a nation will be on the superstar to make an impact.

A Fresh Champion

This final’s matchup ensures there will be a new champion for the first time in four years. Since the inception of the league in 2008, Sydney FC has won the championship twice (2009, 2013). A win for Perth Glory would be their first-ever championship crown. Both teams will look to raise a championship after a drought, with Red Stars players looking to become heroes in fans’ eyes.

The Grand Final will take place in Sydney on Friday, February 15. Fans in Chicago have access to the stream of the game with an ESPN+ subscription. Kickoff is set for 11:30 pm C.T.
