CHICAGO – Three Red Stars contributed goals in an action-filled Round Seven of Australia’s W-League.
On Saturday Sam Kerr, Katie Naughton and Nikki Stanton of Perth Glory faced Red Stars teammate Arin Wright and the Newcastle Jets, battling it out for a 2-2 draw. After being taken down in the box, Kerr equalized from the penalty spot in the 26th minute. Perth fought hard for a go-ahead goal, but were held off by Wright and Newcastle.
Alyssa Mautz was not on the Perth team sheet this week after receiving a red card against Adelaide United the previous round.
Yuki Nagasato scored the winning goal for Brisbane Roar against current first place team Melbourne Victory in a dramatic, rain-drenched 4-3 game on Saturday. The teams traded goals all night until Nagasato scored a stunner of a goal in the 90th minute. The Victory quickly responded with a goal of their own, but couldn’t find an equalizer, bringing their unbeaten run to an end.
Danielle Colaprico helped lift Sydney FC to a 5-2 victory over Adelaide United on Thursday, scoring the team’s second goal in the 58th minute. Collecting a ricocheted shot, she slotted the ball just past Adelaide’s goalkeeper and buried it into the bottom left corner.
With their win against Adelaide, Sydney jumps into fourth place with nine points trailing the leaders Melbourne Victory by only four points. Perth and Brisbane both sit on 10 points, with Perth in second place on goal difference. In seventh place with seven points are Wright and the Newcastle Jets. With seven more rounds in the season and six points between the leaders and the bottom of the ladder, the Premiership is completely up for grabs.
Round Eight will kick off with Nagasato and Brisbane Roar facing off against Western Sydney Wanderers on Thursday. Perth Glory will take on Sydney FC Friday, while Newcastle Jets will have a Bye until Round Nine.
