W-League Recap – Round 2

CHICAGO – With Sydney FC’s Danielle Colaprico called into the United States Women’s Soccer League camp in Lisbon, just one team showcased Red Stars talent as Perth Glory came from behind in an instant classic.

The match kicked off with an own goal by Canberra’s Denise O’Sullivan to give Perth the lead in the first five minutes. But two minutes later, Canberra was awarded a penalty kick and equalized early on.

Canberra notched two more goals before halftime to lead Perth 3-1 at the break.

Perth was struck with some bad luck as defender Sarah Carroll received two yellow cards, sending her off the field in the 65th minute, putting the Glory down to 10 players for the remainder of the match. Canberra capitalized on the matchup and tallied their fourth and final goal with 13 minutes remaining.

But Perth wasn’t close to being finished.

In the 82nd minute, Sam Kerr’s cross into the box deflected to the feet of midfielder Alyssa Mautz, calmly putting it past the goalkeeper to narrow the scoreline. Five minutes later, teenager Leticia McKenna earned another goal with a chipped ball curling over the goalkeeper’s head.

In the final minute, Kerr streaked into the box, attempting to make a cross to the far post, but her pass was deflected off a Canberra defender, finding its way into the back of the net for another own goal. Perth Glory escaped with a point to the league toppers.

Mautz has two goals in as many games to start the W-League campaign, with Kerr notching an assist in her season debut. Nikki Stanton and Katie Naughton also got the start for Perth, playing the entire 90 minutes.

Being the only team with two draws, Perth landed in sixth place with two points.

With an international FIFA break underway, the W-League will resume play on November 16. Perth will face off against Western Sydney Wanderers as Sydney FC hold a Bye.
