CHICAGO-The United States National team opened their CONCACAF Championship campaign with a dominant 6-0 win over Mexico Thursday night.
Megan Rapinoe opened the scoring three minutes into the match to give the Americans a 1-0 lead they’d carry into halftime.
Early into the second half, Julie Ertz of the Chicago Red Stars capitalized on a rebound shot for the 2-0 lead and for U.S. WNT to have some breathing room. A Rapinoe free kick hit the post after a Mexico defender attempted to clear it and following another deflection off a Mexico player it found the feet of Julie Ertz for the goal.
Goals from Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath and Rapinoe sealed the win in the opening game.
Aside from Ertz, Chicago’s Alyssa Naeher got the start and earned a clean sheet. It was her first appearance in the CONCACAF Championships. The shutout was the 17th of her career in 34 appearances.
Christina Murillo entered the game for Mexico in the 77th minute and played the final 13 minutes of the game.
USA sits at the top of Group A entering their next match against Panama on Sunday (4pm CT; FS1).
