Two Goals and an Assist in Round 5 Play

Hoy scores in third-straight match, DiBernardo tallies first of season

CHICAGO – The Red Stars in the W-League lit up the weekend, combining for two goals and an assist after each played all 90 minutes.

Adelaide United was the first to bring the action in Round 5, finishing with a 2-2 draw against Canberra United. After Canberra led with a goal in the 26th minute, Sofia Huerta notched her second assist of the season off a goal from Racheal Quigley to equalize. Huerta created the most opportunities for Adelaide with three of her six shots on target. Danielle Colaprico followed with four shots in the game, as Katie Naughton led the defense with seven one-on-one opportunities won.

The Newcastle Jets fell just short in a 2-1 defeat to Sydney FC. After going down in the first 16 minutes of the match, the Jets’ defense fought from giving up any more goals in the first half. Seconds into the second half, Jen Hoy found herself placed perfectly in the box for a rebound and put away the equalizer from close range. The goal marks Hoy’s third goal in three weeks. Despite giving up the game-winning goal minutes later, the Jets’ defense remained strong with the help of Arin Gilliland intercepting five balls and winning over half the duels she created. Both Hoy and Gilliland are up for Newcastle Jets Player of the Month (vote here).

After their Round 4 bye week, Perth Glory came out with a spark, defeating Melbourne Victory in a 2-0 shutout. Glory took the lead in the 16th minute and would end the first half with the one goal lead. Vanessa DiBernardo would further the Glory’s lead in the 64th minute after turning a defender and taking a left-footed strike from outside the box, netting her first goal of the season. Alyssa Mautz contributed two of her three shots on frame for the Glory. The Victory’s defense was helped out by Samantha Johnson, who was able to stop seven balls from the Glory’s attacking half as well as intercepting two possible scoring opportunities.
