Johnston, Naeher and Press compete in their first Olympics
CHICAGO – Three Chicago Red Stars are ready to make their mark at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Jill Ellis named Julie Johnston, Alyssa Naeher and Christen Press to the 18-player Olympic roster on July 12, 2016. Ranked number one in the world and the favorite to win, the USWNT will have to battle through a strong group consisting of New Zealand, France and Colombia to move on in hopes of capturing their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
Eleven nations look to take the Olympic crown from the USWNT beginning today. Split into three groups, the top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout rounds.
GROUP E: Brazil, China, Sweden, South Africa
GROUP F: Canada, Australia, Germany, Zimbabwe
GROUP G: United States, New Zealand, France, Colombia
Team USA Group Play Schedule:
Aug. 3: vs. New Zealand, 5 p.m.
Aug. 6: vs. France, 3 p.m.
Aug. 9: vs. Colombia, 5 p.m.
The USWNT has a combined record of 32-3-3 when facing the opponents in group play.
The Chicago Red Stars will be hosting their official watch parties for all U.S. Women’s National Team games at AJ Hudson’s throughout the Rio Olympics.
