Johnston, Naeher, Press and USWNT take on Sweden in knockout round
CHICAGO – Chicago Red Stars Julie Johnston, Alyssa Naeher and Christen Press advanced to the Quarterfinals of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with the U.S. Women’s National Team. After a first-place finish (7 points, 2-0-1), the United States faces Sweden on Friday, August 12, at 11 a.m. CT in Brasilia.
After the USA and Sweden match, the three other quarterfinal matches will follow with China taking on Germany, France against Canada, and Australia facing host nation Brazil. With a win in the quarterfinals, the United States will take on the winner of China versus Germany in the semifinals, which will be held on Tuesday, August 16. (Full Schedule)
Chicago forward Christen Press earned her first start in the Olympics against Colombia, but has appeared in all three matches. Defender Julie Johnston started the opening match for the United States against New Zealand, but was a last minute pull from the starting line-up against France due to a nagging groin injury. Alyssa Naeher, the backup goalkeeper to Hope Solo of the Seattle Reign, has been available for all United States matches.
