CHICAGO — Sam Kerr has informed the Chicago Red Stars she will not return to the team for the upcoming 2020 National Women’s Soccer League season in order to pursue a playing opportunity in Europe.
“On behalf of everyone at the Red Stars and our supporters we want to thank Sam for her commitment and contributions to Chicago over the past 2 years,” Red Stars Owner Arnim Whisler said. “We wish Sam all the best on the next step in her journey. Sam’s spirit, grit, talent, and humor are very special and will be missed.”
“We wish Sam nothing but the best,” Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames said. “She is an incredible person on and off the field and we will continue to support her from Chicago.”
Kerr, 26, joined the Red Stars via trade in January of 2018. In two seasons with Chicago, the forward totaled 34 goals and nine assists. Kerr won consecutive Golden Boots while a member of the Red Stars and was the recipient of the 2019 NWSL MVP award, becoming the first player in Red Stars history to win the award. Her 18 goals this year for Chicago in 2019 is a league record for most goals in a single season.
