CHICAGO – Chicago Red Stars forward Sofia Huerta was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 9 of the 2016 NWSL season.
Huerta, 23, had two goals to help the Red Stars earn a 3-0 victory over the Boston Breakers at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. It was the team’s third win at home this season.
The Boise, Idaho native made her first goal of the game early in the third minute when she netted a pass received at the top of the sixth from Vanessa DiBernardo. (Watch – Goal)
The Santa Clara University product scored again in the 47th minute when she maneuvered the ball around two Boston defenders outside the eighteen and shot it left post past the hands of Boston goalkeeper Libby Stout. (Watch – Goal)
Huerta played 68 minutes in the game and finished with two shots on goal.
It is the third time Huerta has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week. It is the eighth time a member of the Chicago Red Stars has won the award.
The Chicago Red Stars return to action Wednesday, June 22 at 10 p.m. ET against Portland Thorns FC at Providence Park in Portland, Ore.
