Huerta notches penalty kick in Round 6 play
CHICAGO – In Round 6 of the W-League, Arin Gilliland and Jen Hoy of the Newcastle Jets found a bye week as five Red Stars saw a win, loss and a tie this past weekend.
Adelaide United fell behind early to the Brisbane Roar, going down 2-0 in the first half, only to give up another within minutes of second half play. Adelaide fought late in the second half and would find themselves finishing the match with some dignity in a 2-3 loss. Sofia Huerta was a threat the entire match and had the final say in the scoreline, converting a penalty kick in the 74th minute. The midfield was busy as Danielle Colaprico played over thirty successful passes, including three plays that created chances for Adelaide. At the central back position, Katie Naughton was able to stop the Brisbane attack and accounted for over 15 successful tackles and clearances.
Melbourne Victory ended its four game losing drought after fighting to a 2-2 draw against Western Sydney Wanderers. The Victory backline was without Sam Johnson due to yellow card accumulation.
In the weekend’s last match up, Perth Glory came up with the biggest win of Round 6 with a 1-0 shutout over second-place Sydney FC. Vanessa DiBernardo nearly upped the score with a rocket on frame in the second half, one of her five shot attempts. Alyssa Mautz dominated the outside flank for Perth and created multiple scoring opportunities.
