The Boise, Idaho native’s first goal came early in the second half when midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo found Huerta near the goal, who was able to score against the Breakers’ goalkeeper Jami Kranich in a one-on-one situation, giving the Red Stars a 1-0 lead.
The Red Stars continued to find the back of the net in the second half when forward Cara Walls blasted one past Kranich in the 70th minute with an assist from Huerta, putting Chicago up by two late in the game.
The Red Stars scoring run wouldn’t stop there. Huerta continued to look for opportunities to score and her second goal came in the 82nd minute with a beautiful cross from defender Arin Gilliland, who also recorded her first ever career assist.
Huerta, who played collegiately for Santa Clara and was selected by the Red Stars #11 overall in the 2014 NWSL draft, is the fourth Red Stars player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week. Teammate, Christen Press received the honor earlier this season in Week 2. Midfielder Lori Chalupny received the honor in Week 10 and forward Jen Hoy earned the selection in Week 19 of the 2013 NWSL season.
The Chicago Red Stars will take to the road for the first time this season Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. CT against the Houston Dash at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
