Get to Know: North Carolina Courage

CHICAGO — The Chicago Red Stars return home to take on the North Carolina Courage at SeatGeek Stadium on Sunday, May 12 at 5 p.m. CT. It will be the second time in this early NWSL season the teams will face off.

Here’s what you need to know about our upcoming opponent:

Who’s Hot

Lynn Williams finished second in the 2018 NWSL Golden Boot race and the forward is continuing to push herself this season to take the title. Williams had consecutive games where she scored a goal and assisted another. With Crystal Dunn and Jessica McDonald away with the U.S. Women’s National Team, Williams is the club’s leading scorer on the active roster.

Opponent Form

After scoring nine goals in their previous two games, the Courage were stifled by Sky Blue FC this past Saturday. Three saves by SBFC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made three saves to keep North Carolina off the scoresheet and Merrit Mathias made a game-saving clearance in the 90th minute to salvage the 0-0 draw for North Carolina. It was the first time all season the Courage were held scoreless.

Head-to-Head

Chicago opened the 2019 season at WakeMed Soccer Park against North Carolina. The Red Stars struck first in the 26th minute. Yuki Nagasato delivered a dime to Sam Kerr, who maneuvered past the Courage goalkeeper for the first goal of the NWSL season. The Courage would answer back courtesy of Crystal Dunn in the 66th minute to tie the game. The two have been even throughout the seasons with an overall record of 3-3-3.

Fun Stat to Know

North Carolina and Chicago are the two highest-scoring teams in the league, scoring 10 and 8 goals respectively.
