CHICAGO – The Red Stars travel to North Carolina for the second time this season, taking on the front runners in a midweek match up on Wednesday, July 4. The match will kick off at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on the NWSL app and the go90 app.
Here are a few things to look for in North Carolina:
One Loss Too Many
In a surprising turn, the North Carolina Courage lost their first match of the season, as Utah Royals FC spoiled the nearly perfect season for the current leaders. The loss came at home with a last-second goal by Utah’s Brittany Ratcliffe in second half stoppage time.
High-Profile Injuries
In the recent weeks, the Courage has been struck with injuries, as defender Abby Dahlkemper and midfielder Samantha Mewis both dropped from the roster against Seattle due to knee pain. Dahlkemper hasn’t been available in two prior matches, but played all 90 minutes in their last match, while forward Lynn Williams has remained hit or miss in prior weeks from a hamstring strain.
Dunn Steps Up
With certain veteran players iffy from injuries, U.S. Women’s National Team forward Crystal Dunn has stepped up in the attacking third, notching six goals this season, enough to put her just behind current NWSL goal leader, Christine Sinclair. Next to Dunn, Jessica McDonald has added four goals for the Courage, while five North Carolina players round out the top 10 assisters this season.
