CHICAGO (Aug. 29, 2018) – Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month by the NWSL Media Association for the month of August of the 2018 NWSL season.
With 14 goals on the season, Kerr is now leading the race for the NWSL Golden Boot including tallying five goals and one assist in the month of August. Chicago currently has a six-game unbeaten streak and sits fourth in the league standings with 34 points (8-4-10 overall record).
The Australia international was the lone goal scorer for the Red Stars in a 1-1 draw against league-leading North Carolina Courage on Aug. 10 when she headed in a cross from Vanessa DiBernardo to equalize the game in the 64th minute. (Watch Highlights)
Following a midweek scoreless draw at Seattle Reign FC (Watch Highlights), Kerr demonstrated her killer instinct scoring two goals in a 2-2 tie at Portland Thorns FC, pouncing on a poor back pass in the 44th minute and then finishing off a pass from DiBernardo in the 49th minute. (Watch Highlights)
The Fremantle, Australia native showcased her talents once again when she recorded a brace and an assist in Chicago’s 3-1 victory on the road against Orlando Pride on Aug. 25. Coming off a pass from Yuki Nagasato in the 44th minute, Kerr was in behind beating a defender before burying her shot low into the near post. In the 59th minute, Kerr notched her second of the game capitalizing on a momentary lapse to step in and steal the ball off a defender and beat the stranded goalkeeper. (Watch Highlights)
Kerr played all 360 minutes and finished the month with 11 of 26 shots on goal and eight chances created on 209 touches.
It is the third time Kerr has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Month and marks the fifth time a Red Stars player has received the award.
The Chicago Red Stars will return to action Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET against Sky Blue FC at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.
