W-League Recap: Round 11
CHICAGO — Chicago Red Stars star forward Sam Kerr scored a historic goal this week in Australia’s Westfield W-League for her club Perth Glory.
Against the Newcastle Jets, Kerr soared above the defense to connect with a header to open the scoring on the day. That goal was the Aussie’s 50th with Perth Glory and put them ahead 1-0 at halftime. With the goal, Kerr now sits at second all-time in W-League goals scored, only trailing Adelaide’s Michelle Heyman.
However, Kerr’s historic day would be overshadowed by a Newcastle comeback sparked by another Red Stars player. Arin Wright took a strike from distance that found the back of the net for the equalizer in the 57th minute. Newcastle would score two more goals to seal the 3-1 victory. Kerr, Wright, Alyssa Mautz, and Katie Naughton played the entire 90 minutes on the day.
Elsewhere, Yuki Nagasato’s Brisbane Roar took down Melbourne City FC Women 1-0 thanks to a goal by Chioma Ubogagu in the 74th minute. Nagasato played all 90 minutes in the game.
After Round 11’s results, Nagasato and Brisbane usurped Perth Glory in the W-League ladder. Brisbane currently sits in second place with 17 points, while Perth slumps down to third place with 16 points. Behind both teams is Danielle Colaprico’s Sydney FC Women in fourth place with 15 points and Wright’s Newcastle Jets keep their playoff hopes alive, sitting in eighth place with 10 points.
