Sam Kerr is Ready to be in Chicago

On January 18, the Red Stars signed Australian International Sam Kerr in what was considered a major blockbuster trade deal between Houston and Sky Blue FC. At just 24 years old, Kerr has a multitude of talent to showcase, along with her long list of accolades for both club and country.

W-League

Hailing from Perth, Australia, Kerr signed with her home club team at just 15 in 2008. In her first three seasons for the Glory, Kerr would tally a total of five goals.

In 2012, Kerr was traded to Sydney FC for the season, where she led the team with nine goals, including three in the postseason. During the semifinals, Kerr notched a brace to lead Sydney to their third Grand Finale. In the Championship match against Melbourne Victory, Kerr scored the game-winning goal to give the team their second Championship in the W-League.

The following year in 2014, Kerr returned home to play for Perth. Between the 2014-2017 seasons, the young striker made an exceptional difference for the team, helping the team to two Grande Finales (2014, 2017).

Last season, Kerr won Goal of the Year honors and was awarded the Julie Dolan Medal, honoring the best player in the league. In the current W-League season, Kerr leads the league with 11 goals, including last weeks hat trick in Round 12’s draw against Canberra.

Despite switching teams in the states, Kerr will link up with some familiar faces from Australia. In the 2015-16 season, Kerr played alongside Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo. The next season, Alyssa Mautz joined the duo.

NWSL

Kerr signed with Western New York Flash for the inaugural NWSL season in 2013. She played two seasons with the Flash, tallying 15 goals in 41 appearances.

She was traded to Sky Blue FC in 2015, joining Australian national teammate Caitlin Foord. She led the team with six goals, while only playing in nine matches due to national team duty in the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada.

The next season, Kerr appeared nine times again, while preparing for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, but still managed to notch five goals.

It was 2017 that became Kerr’s year for the team, setting a new NWSL record by scoring four goals in a single game. This led to Kerr breaking another record of most goals in a season with 17, earning the Golden Boot title. Kerr is the current leader in the NWSL All-Time Leading Scorers category with 43 goals.

Australia Women’s National Team

Since 2008, Kerr as appeared in 57 matches for Australia, scoring 19 goals. Australia is currently ranked a country-high fourth place in FIFA Rankings.

The last major competition Australia won was the 2017 Tournament of Nations, hosted by the United States. Australia defeated the number one-ranked U.S. (1-0), Japan (4-2), and Brazil (6-1). Kerr scored a hat trick against Japan and the final goal against Brazil, leading the tournament with four goals.

After a stellar 2017 year, Kerr was nominated for FIFA’s Women’s World Player of the Year; however, she was not included in the final shortlist to much controversy.

While being a stunner on the field, Kerr even made a scene off the field. At the start of this year, Kerr played a pick-up game with three young boys who knocked on her front door.

With the 2018 season nearing, Kerr will join fellow Sky Blue FC trade Nikki Stanton with the Red Stars for the sixth NWSL season, opening up the weekend of March 24-25.
