Sam Kerr Headlines NWSL Team of the Month

CHICAGO – Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr leads the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Team of the Month, presented by Cutter® Insect Repellent, voted by the NWSL Media Association for the month of August of the 2018 NWSL season.

The Australia international was voted NWSL Player of the Month for the second consecutive month and sixth time overall. Meanwhile, North Carolina Courage defender Abby Erceg and Portland Thorns FC midfielder Lindsey Horanwere named to the squad for the fourth time this season.

Five players were honored for the first time as members of the NWSL Team of the Month – with Houston Dash defender Taylor Comeau, Chicago Red Stars midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo, Portland Thorns FC forward Tobin Heath, Seattle Reign FC defender Megan Oysterand Seattle Reign FC goalkeeper Lydia Williamsall making their debut on the squad.

The Reign FC led the way with three players voted to the Team of the Month, followed by the Courage, Dash, Red Stars and Thorns with two each apiece.

NWSL Team of the Month – August

GK – Lydia Williams, Seattle Reign FC:Williams recorded four clean sheets in the month of August, making 22 saves to help lead her club to a 3-0-2 record and a 0.20 goals-against-average.

D – Abby Erceg, North Carolina Courage:In August, Erceg and the Courage claimed their second-consecutive NWSL Shield on Aug. 3. She started and played all four games, recording 25 clearances, nine interceptions and eight blocks.

D – Megan Oyster, Seattle Reign FC: Oyster earned one assist in five appearances in August. She also registered 21 interceptions, 24 clearances andtwo blocked shots.

D – Theresa Nielsen, Seattle Reign FC: Nielsen scored one goal and added an assist in addition to her defensive duties in the month. She also recorded 14 tackles won, 17 clearances and seven interceptions in five appearances.

D – Taylor Comeau, Houston Dash:Comeau enjoyed a strong overall performance with nine clearances, seven interceptions in five games as the Dash went 3-2-0 in August. She also notched an assist in a 4-0 victory over Washington Spirit on Aug. 17.

M – Vanessa DiBernardo, Chicago Red Stars: DiBernardo had a goal and two assists while taking 10 shots during the month. She finished the month with 15 chances created off a total of 259 touches in 359 minutes.

M – Lindsey Horan, Portland Thorns FC: Horan scored two goals and played all 450 minutes for the Thorns FC during the month. She won 12 of 15 tackles with 10 interceptions and 12 clearances.

M – Sofia Huerta, Houston Dash:Huerta had three goals and two assists in five appearances for the Dash during August. She earned the game-winning assist against Sky Blue FC on Aug. 25.

F – Tobin Heath, Portland Thorns FC: Heath recorded three goals and three assists in an inspiring display during the month. She created 12 chances and was directly involved in game-winninggoal against Orlando on Aug. 11.

F – Sam Kerr, Chicago Red Stars:Kerr scored five goals and added an assist in the month – including a brace on Aug. 18 and Aug. 25 against Portland and Orlando, respectively.

F – Lynn Williams, North Carolina Courage:Williams scored four goals in four games in August – including two goals on Aug. 5 in a 2-1 victory over Portland Thorns FC.

The NWSL will return to action Saturday, Sept. 1 as Sky Blue FC travel to take on the Washington Spirit at 7 p.m. ET before Sky Blue head to Chicago for a match up with the Red Stars on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The 2018 season will wrap up the next week as the Portland Thorns FC welcome the Seattle Reign FC in the NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime at 10 p.m. ET on Sept. 7. On Saturday, Sept. 8, Sky Blue FC take on the Orlando Pride at 12 p.m. ET and the Utah Royals FC face off against Chicago Red Stars at 3:30 p.m. ET. The season concludes with North Carolina Courage hosting the Houston Dash at 7:30 p.m. ET.
