Red Stars Reserves battle city rivals Chicago City SC

CHICAGO After grabbing four points over the weekend, the Red Stars Reserves shift their focus to matchup against city rivals Chicago City SC on Wednesday, June 19 at Illinois Tech Stuart Field.

“The Chicago market has a lot of local talent and it is always fun to see players that we know, ” Reserves coach Brian Kibler said. “The rivalry is friendly between us. We like to see them do well against the Wisconsin and Indiana teams. Having an away game so close is really convenient.”

The rivalry is a new development in the Women’s Premier Soccer League after Chicago City began play last season. Through two games played, the Red Stars Reserves have dominated the series, winning both matchups last season 5-0 and 5-1 respectively.

Chicago City enters Wednesday fifth in the Midwest Conference. They will look for Gabrielle Whittinghill to provide scoring chances as the club’s leading goalscorer has two goals this season.

On the other side, the Reserves have 13 points and are top of the Midwest Conference. Haley Johnson leads the Reserves with three goals, while Chandra Eigenberger has three assists. The team has scored 13 goals from 10 different players and their rotation of three different goalkeepers has only conceded three times.

“We have a deep team, and it’s important for us to give them all a chance to showcase their skills and talents,” Reserves coach Brian Kibler said. “We want to continue to take points in every game, preferably three, to finish the season undefeated and in good healthy form for the playoffs.”

The Reserves playoff push continues Wednesday, with kickoff for the Battle of Chicago scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
