Reserves Remain Perfect

Chicago – The Chicago Red Stars Reserves beat the Des Moines Menace, 4 – 0, on Saturday, July 2nd at the Nike Sports Complex in their final regular season home match of the 2016 season.

Ashleigh Ellenwood, Red Stars’ forward, came on for Gabby Veldman in the 21st minute and within ten minutes scored the first goal of the match. Ellenwood hit the bottom right corner of the Des Moines goal off of a through pass from Rebekah Roller in the 30th minute. This was Ellenwood’s third goal of 2016 and Roller’s first assist.

Six minutes later it was Janelle Flaws, Chicago forward, in the box, finishing a cross from Alexa Ben to double Chicago’s lead. Flaws is one of Chicago’s standout scorers with 9 goals in 5 matches this season.

The Red Stars wasted no time when they came out for the second half, scoring the third goal of the match in the 53rd minute. Alexa Ben added a goal to her first half assist when her deflected shot ended up into the lower right corner of the Menace net. Ben has two goals and one assist in four appearances this year for Chicago.

Chicago found the final goal of the match in the 65th minute. Chicago defender Candace Johnson scored a header from one of seven Red Star corner kicks in the match. Johnson got to Taylor Schissler’s cross and finished it for her first goal and Schissler’s first assist of 2016.

Chicago finished the match with 20 shots and 14 on goal, while they held Des Moines to 6 shots and only 2 on frame. This was the Red Stars sixth shutout in as many matches.

The Chicago Red Stars Reserves play away against the Des Moines Menace on July 16th at Valley Stadium in their second to last match of the regular season.
