Sam Kerr Scores Four Goals Leading Australia to Sweet 16

CHICAGO — With qualification to the knockout stages on the line, the Sam Kerr “Suck on That One” Tour got a nitro-charged boost when the Chicago Red Stars striker sunk Jamaica by scoring all four goals in the Matildas 4-1 victory.

Kerr has long been the face of Australia football, but against the Reggae Girlz she etched her name in history, becoming the first ever Australian to score a hat-trick in the World Cup. She gave the Matildas the lead in the 11th minute, getting ahead of the defense at the near post to head the ball into the back of the net. The Matilda’s would hold the lead throughout the rest of the match.

Air Kerr rose to the occasion once again before the half to head into the locker room up by two. The captain was unmarked in the box, leaving her with a wide open chance for an open header.

Jamaica made history of their own by cutting the deficit to one after their first World Cup goal ever was tallied Havana Solaun in the 49th minute. However, the match would become Kerr’s historic night. Soon after the Australian captain would take advantage of a deflection inside the box resulting in the ball landing in front of her feet for the hat-trick.

The superstar wasn’t done, however, as Kerr would again make Jamaica pay after a defensive mistake. A ball played back to the Jamaican goalkeeper was easily snatched by the Aussie sensation and tucked away in the back of the net.

It was an incredibly clinical performance by Kerr, who converted an outstanding four of her seven shots on goal. She is now tied with the U.S. Women’s National Team’s Alex Morgan for the Golden Boot of the tournament.

Prior to the match, Jamaica coach Hue Menzies mentioned Kerr as “the best player in the world” and that his team would need to identify how to stop the young Australian. However, Kerr found her moments and rose to the occasion for her country as Australia would secure a second-place finish in a razor-thin Group C thanks to Kerr’s final goal.

Italy, Brazil, and Australia all finished the group stage with 6 points, but goal differential propelled the Matildas above Brazil in the standings.

The World Cup now has its first official confirmed match of the knockout stages, as Kerr and Australia await Norway in the Round of 16. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, June 22 at 2 PM C.T.
