Chicago, Il. (July 3, 2013) – After a tough road loss to Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, the Chicago Red Stars aim to get back into the swing of things when they take on the Western New York Flash this Fourth of July at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex.
In the Seattle match, a second-half PK would give the Reign the advantage, while midfielder Jessica Fishlock would put away another Seattle goal minutes later. The Red Stars found life in the 87th minute with a goal by defender Michelle Wenino, but were scored on a third time while pressing for the equalizer in the final minutes of the match.
When Chicago last met the Flash, both teams walked away with two goals apiece—Alyssa Mautz and Leslie Osborne recorded goals for the Red Stars and Adriana Martin and Brittany Taylor put two away to even the game for Western New York late in the match.
The game will have a different spin on it this time around, however, as both teams have had changes in their lineups. The Red Stars have added Adriana Leon from the Boston Breakers, in exchange for defender Carmelina Moscato, and look to showcase the forward tomorrow. In addition, goalkeeper Erin McLeod, who did not make an appearance in the last Red Stars vs. Flash match due to Canadian national team duties, will tend the goal for Chicago. On the Western New York side, USWNT stars Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach will play their first game at Benedictine, as both players were needed in a USWNT friendly during the most recent contest between the two clubs.
The Flash, who are riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, won their last game 4-0 over the Washington Spirit. Lloyd recorded a hat trick, defender Brittany Taylor added her second goal of the season, and Wambach proved clutch with three assists.
The Red Stars unveiled their third kit for the 2013 season yesterday. It is an all-red top that will be worn for the Independence Day clash only. These one-of-a-kind jerseys are available during an in-game silent auction where fans can bid for a chance to win the jersey and meet & greet with a player.
Red Stars vs Western New York Flash kicks off tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. CT at the Village of Lisle—Benedictine Sports Complex, and will be streamed live online in English and Spanish. Fans can also follow the Red Stars Twitter account for live in-game updates: @chicagoredstars.
