CHICAGO – The Red Stars have headed out for their only two-game road series of the season with matches against the Boston Breakers on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
The Red Stars (2-2-1, 7pts) are coming off a strong 1-0 win at home on Sunday against the Houston Dash, after a 3-hour start time delay due to inclement weather. Forward Jen Hoy scored her first goal of the season with a volley over Houston’s goalkeeper in the 33rd minute. The Red Stars are currently sitting 5th in the NWSL league standings, while Boston is tied with Houston at the bottom of the chart.
The Red Stars are led by midfield team captain Lori Chalupny, who has played every minute this season for the Red Stars along with fellow midfielder, rookie Vanessa DiBernardo. Canadian veteran goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc has earned two shutouts this season along with a stingy Chicago defense that has only allowed three goals in 5 matches this season.
Recently signed international players Abby Erceg (New Zealand) and Emily Van Egmond (Australia) are set to arrive to Red Stars camp later this month, along with allocated U.S. Women’s National Team forward Christen Press. Canadian allocation Melissa Tancredi made her league debut Sunday against Houston, appearing for 30 minutes, but she has not traveled with the team as she is still completing chiropractic school.
The Boston Breakers feature U.S. Women’s National Team members Heather O’Reilly and Kristie Mewis, as well as English international Lianne Sanderson This will also be Nikki Washington’s first game with the Breakers after being sent to Boston in a trade with the Dash that included Canadian midfielder Kaylyn Kyle.
Both matches will take place at Harvard Stadium and will be streamed live, for free. Fans can also follow the Red Stars official gameday Twitter account for live in-game updates: @redstarslive.
