CHICAGO – The Chicago Red Stars announced today the signing of Australia international midfielder Emily Van Egmond, pending the receipt of her P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC), for the remainder of the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season. Per league and club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The 20 year-old Newcastle, Australia native most recently competed with Western Sydney Wanderers in the Australian W-League, after spending time with American sides Western New York Flash in 2012 and Seattle Reign FC during the 2013 NWSL season.
She was a regular member of the Australia U-20 and U-17 teams before being called up to the senior squad at the young age of 15. Her experiences led her to being honored as co-captain for the “Matildas” in the last year.
She was recently called up to Australia’s squad for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, which also serves as qualification for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This year’s Asian Cup is set to take place in Vietnam, with games in Hồ Chí Minh City and in Thủ Dầu Một. Australia has been grouped alongside Vietnam, Japan, and Jordan with matches on May 14 (Japan), May 16 (Jordan), and May 18 (Vietnam). If they qualify, the semifinals take place on May 22 and the final on May 25. Van Egmond is expected to join the Red Stars at the completion of this Cup.
