Red Stars Season Finale in KC Sunday

Chicago, IL  – The Red Stars will head to KC this weekend to take on playoff-bound FC Kansas City in what will mark Chicago’s final match of the 2013 NWSL season.

The Red Stars (7-8-6, 27 pts) had their playoff hopes cut short in a truncated match at Washington on August 7. Down by a goal, with only 14 minutes remaining, a strange series of weather delays would render the match impossible to go on, and near midnight in just the 80th minute the match was called final. Chicago now sits in 6th place in the NWSL standings, 3 points behind Boston Breakers and 8 points away from the 3-way league tie for the final 3 playoff spots.

The team’s most recent match was a come-from-behind 3-3 tie against Sky Blue FC in the Red Stars home finale last Saturday. Defender Jackie Santacaterina put in a stellar performance assisting on the first goal and nodding in the 2nd and 3rd goals to keep the score level and steal a point.

Kansas City sits comfortably atop the table with an 11-5-5 record, 38 points, and 3 points ahead of the other three playoff finalists. A win or a draw by Kansas City will likely give them an important home-field advantage through the NWSL playoffs that begin the following weekend. Their most recent match was a snap to their 10-game winning streak when they travelled to the Boston Breakers and dropped a 1-0 contest.

KC has been led this season by the stellar play of UWSNT midfielder Lauren Holiday, who leads the league in goals and assists, as well as Chicago-native Jen Buczkowski, and rookie Erika Tymrak. Goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart leads the league in shutouts on the year.

This will be the final of 4 games between the two teams, with the series tied overall at 1-1-1.

Kickoff will be at 3:10 PM CT on Verizon Wireless Field in Overland Park, Kansas, and will be available for fans to watch via live webstream.
