CHICAGO – The Chicago Red Stars Reserves extended their win-streak to five games by bringing down the Minnesota Twin Stars, 6-0, on Saturday, June 18. The Red Stars took the clean sheet, only allowing the Twin Stars one shot.
Morgan Proffitt put the Red Stars on the board early with a pass from Jannelle Flaws. Flaws passed to Proffitt, sending a zinger straight to the back of the net. Just a few minutes later, Flaws created another opportunity; this time for Abigail Reed. Reed received a quick pass from Flaws on the right. Reed tapped it in, giving the Red Stars a 2-0 lead.
Chicago continued to play strong until the very last minute. After setting up two scoring plays, Flaws found the net in the 44th minute thanks to a pass from April Cronin.
The Red Stars did not waste any time getting into the second half as they continued their scoring streak in the 54th minute. Ashleigh Ellenwood tamed a wild pass from Ashley Campbell, finessing it across the line to give Chicago a four-goal lead.
As time in the second half wound down, opportunities in front of the net continued to soar. In the 74th minute, Cronin setup a chance at the net for her second assist of the night. This time, Gabby Veldman was on the receiving end of her hard pass, launching the ball past the Twin Stars keeper, Danielle Mendez.
The 83rd minute brought back a familiar duo to close out the Twin Stars. Flaws and Cronin teamed up once again on the attack. Cronin fed a long pass to Flaws, who then curved the shot away from the hands of Mendez, resulting in a 6-0 win for Chicago.
The Twin Stars felt their opportunities slipping as Margaret Haring committed a foul, leading to a yellow card just 2 minutes shy of the final whistle.
In 90 minutes, the Red Stars recorded 40 shots, 21 on target, and zero saves while keeping the Twin Stars at bay. Chicago barred Minnesota out of their offensive half, forcing zero shots on goal and 15 saves.
