Chicago, IL – The Red Stars are battling for a playoff position when they take on undefeated Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, July 12, at 7:00 p.m. CT. The match-up will be the first and only time the Red Stars host the Reign during the regular season.
After two matches in six days against Portland Thorns FC, the Red Stars (6-6-4, 22pts) find themselves still tied with the Thorns in the NWSL standings and just out of the coveted four playoff positions. The Red Stars had to fight their way back into the match on Wednesday, in a game that would end in a 1-1 draw determined by penalty kicks. Thorns FC were awarded a penalty kick in the first half, when Christen Press was called for a surprise foul in the box and Thorns midfielder Allie Long made the conversion. A handball by Thorns defender Nikki Marshall would grant Emily Van Egmond a penalty kick to tie the game in the 86th minute.
Seattle Reign FC (13-0-3, 42pts) remains the team to beat in the NWSL and has set a new NWSL record for points in a season with 42 and still eight matches left to play. The previous record was 38 points in 2013 by Western New York Flash, FC Kansas City and Portland Thorns FC. Reign FC are coming off a 3-2 home victory against the Boston Breakers. The game-winning goal came late in the match by Reign midfielder Jessica Fishlock in the 83rd minute.
The Reign feature a star-studded lineup which includes U.S. Women’s National Team stars Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe and Sydney Leroux.
The Red Stars have a tough stretch ahead as they fight to move into a playoff position. The team is currently one point behind the 4th place Washington Spirit. The Red Stars will face the Thorns again on July 17 before making their final trip to Seattle on July 20.
