Chicago, IL – The Red Stars have headed to Rochester, New York for the first time this season to meet Western New York Flash tonight, Wednesday, June 18, at 7:00 p.m. ET / 6:00 p.m. CT.
The Red Stars (6-4-2, 20pts) are looking to earn three points on the road after a disappointing 2-2 tie against Sky Blue FC at home on Sunday. The Red Stars hit the woodwork several times during the match, including on a penalty kick that would have sent them up 3-0 in the first half. Alyssa Mautz and Zakiya Bywaters were the first-half goal scorers for Chicago. Sky Blue FC had a three-minute surge in the second half where they scored two goals and earned the point on the road. With the tie, the Red Stars edged the Washington Spirit out of third place in the NWSL standings.
Western New York Flash (4-6-2, 14pts) returns home after falling 2-1 to the Houston Dash on June 11, ending their three-game road trip. The match against the Red Stars is the beginning of a long homestead for the Flash with seven of eight games at Sahlen Stadium. The team will return to Houston for the single road match during that time span.
The Flash had a record setting performance against Portland Thorns FC on June 7. The Flash tied the NWSL record for most goals scored in a game and largest margin of victory in league history with a 5-0 victory. The match also marked the first time in NWSL history the Flash beat the Thorns.
The Red Stars and Flash will be meeting for the first time since the season opener, where the Red Stars squeaked out a 1-0 victory on April 19 following the Chicago Fire 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution of MLS. Red Stars rookie defender Julie Johnston scored the game-winning goal off of a corner kick from fellow rookie midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo.
With the Red Stars still missing 5 players to National Team call-ups including Abby Erceg (NZ), Julie Johnston (USA), Karina LeBlanc (CAN), Adriana Leon (CAN), and Christen Press (USA), they have called up an additional amateur player, Michele Weissenhofer. Weissenhofer, a 26-year old forward from Naperville, Illinois, has several years experience with the Red Stars through previous leagues. Her availability for the match is pending official league registration clearance.
