Chicago, IL – After officially moving up another slot in the NWSL standings, the Chicago Red Stars (3-5-2, 11 pts) will take on the third place Western New York Flash (5-2-2, 17 pts) at home on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Benedictine Sports Complex in Lisle. Both teams have been on a hot streak, with the Red Stars winning 3 of their last 4 and WNY riding a 6-game undefeated streak.
The Red Stars will be primed take on the Flash, who came back from a goal deficit to defeat the Red Stars 2-1 in Rochester on May 24, in the teams’ first meeting of the season.
Chicago’s most recent match, against FC Kansas City on Sunday, was won off a hard-earned comeback after a third-minute FCKC goal. Ella Masar had the go-ahead goal, while German newcomers Inka Grings and Sonja Fuss each scored their first NWSL goals of the year. Midfielder Leslie Osborne returned for her first match since injuring her knee against Portland on May 12.
This will be the Red Stars final game of a heavy 4-game stretch that saw them beat Boston Breakers at home on Sunday, June 9th, followed by a home and away series with FC Kansas City on Thursday/Sunday which resulted in 1 win, 1 loss. This match will mark their fourth game in just 11 days.
The Red Stars will be missing goalkeeper Erin McLeod and defender Carmelina Moscato due to Canadian WNT duties. Rookie ‘keeper Taylor Vancil, hoping to carry the momentum she has gained in her last couple weeks of play, will return to the goal in McLeod’s place. The Flash will be without USWNT stars Carli Lloyd and Abby Wambach who remain on duty during a two-game friendly series against Korea Republic.
The Red Stars also have two players on the injured reserve list – USWNT midfielder Shannon Boxx and forward Zakiya Bywaters – but are filling their spots with amateur goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire and recently signed college draft pick Jen Hoy.
