Red Stars Meet Reign FC in Seattle Saturday

For the second time this season, the Chicago Red Stars (3-3-5) will go head-to-head with the last-place Seattle Reign FC (1-2-9) this Saturday at 8 p.m. PT in Tukwila, Wash.

The last time the Red Stars met Seattle, in the teams’ first game of the season, the match ended in a 1-1 draw with an equalizing Red Stars goal from Lori Chalupny. Since then, the Red Stars have earned 12 points and 3 wins, while the Reign have picked up 5 points, most recently their first victory of the year against Boston.

When the Red Stars last took to the pitch, against Western New York Flash, it was a quick goal by Alyssa Mautz that put Chicago ahead in the first minute and another off the head of Leslie Osborne just before the half. The Flash were able to equalize after both Chicago goals, earning both teams one point. This solidified the Red Stars’ sixth-place standing in the league, two places in front of the Reign.

Seattle recorded its first win Wednesday when the underdog team came back from a 1-0 deficit to beat the Boston Breakers at home. Midfielder Jessica Fishlock was able to head in a tying goal in the 78th minute, and Christine Nairn was able to put away a late goal in the waning minutes to lock in a win for the Reign.

USWNT midfielder and former Red Stars player Megan Rapinoe made her NWSL debut with the Reign on Wednesday, after coming back from a season with the French club Olympique Lyonnais. Defender and fellow national team player Stephanie Cox will also play her first game with Seattle on Saturday and star keeper Hope Solo will join the Reign in goal for the fifth time this season.

Saturday will be the Reign’s third game in a week, while the Red Stars will come off a week-long break that followed an eleven-day stretch of four games.

Earlier this week, the Red Stars waived forward Jessica McDonald. McDonald was selected by the Red Stars as a free agent and appeared in 9 games for Chicago this season, notching an assist.

Red Stars vs Seattle Reign FC kicks off Saturday at 8:00 pm PT (10:00 pm CT) at Starfire STadium in Tukwila, Wash., and will be streamed live online. Fans can also follow the Red Stars Twitter account for live in-game updates: @chicagoredstars.
