Chicago, Il. – The Chicago Red Stars are riding a two-game win and shutout streak as they head into two home match-ups over the next week, beginning with FC Kansas City on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT at the Village of Lisle – Benedictine University Sports Complex.
Chicago (5-6-3, 18 pts), put an end to WNY Flash’s nine-game unbeaten streak on the 4th of July on the heels of a Lori Chalupny goal. On Wednesday, the team met Washington Spirit for the first time this year in D.C. and came away 2-0 victors, thanks to a self-made goal from recent Canadian acquisition, 20 year-old Adriana Leon. She also assisted on Ella Masar’s tally. Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod has kept the clean sheet in both matches.
With the wins, the Red Stars are now just a point behind 5th place Boston Breakers and 5 points out of a top-four playoff position.
Kansas City (7-4-4, 25 pts), stands in third place in the NWSL standings, but has tied their last two matches with a 1-1 draw at Washington Spirit on July 3 and a 0-0 draw with WNY Flash on July 7.
In the teams’ first meetings, a home-and-away series over 4 days, the “Blues” snatched a 2-0 victory in Chicago, before Chicago returned the favor in KC with a 3-1 victory. This weekend’s matchup looks to feature much differently than the previous two. The Red Stars have not faced KC’s USWNT stars, as they were on national team duty during the last meetings. Kansas City features Lauren Holiday (the former Lauren Cheney), Nicole Barnhart, Becky Sauerbrunn, and newcomer Kristie Mewis. Also missing from the last meetings was Red Stars Canadian goalkeeper McLeod, who was on national team duty of her own.
USWNT head coach Tom Sermanni will be present at tomorrow’s match, and available to media postgame. He will also make an appearance on the live webcast during halftime of the game. Any media seeking credentials for tomorrow’s match can contact [email protected].
