The Chicago Red Stars have made several roster shifts ahead of this weekend’s trip to Portland where they meet Thorns FC on Saturday, June 1st, 2 p.m. PT. The league is facing depleted rosters this weekend as the USWNT has travelled to take on Canada’s WNT in Toronto on Sunday, June 2nd. The Red Stars will be without Canadian players Erin McLeod, Carmelina Moscato and Rachel Quon. The Red Stars only USWNT player, Shannon Boxx, is still recovering from knee surgery and has not travelled with the US team.
The Red Stars two international signings, Germans Sonja Fuss and Inka Grings, arrived on May 21st to Chicago and began training with the team this week. They are both expected to be available for this weekend’s match, pending USSF registration clearance. Forward Grings will wear #21 and defender Fuss will wear #22.
With a 20-player limit for NWSL rosters, the Red Stars had to make room for the arrival of Fuss and Grings. Tryout draftee and forward Hanna Gilmore was waived by the team and is now a free agent. Gilmore, a 22 year-old forward from Texas, played collegiately for Baylor.
Lauren Fowlkes, a 24 year-old Notre Dame graduate who has played in multiple positions for the Red Stars this season, including forward and defensive midfield, announced this week that she is departing the team to pursue Physicians Assistant school at Northwestern University, essentially marking her retirement from soccer. She was also a member of the Red Stars 2012 WPSL Elite squad.
Due to the recent national team call-ups, the Red Stars have also brought in an amateur player for the June 1st match who is a familiar face to the team. Goalkeeper Jamie Forbes will serve as a backup to rookie ‘keeper Taylor Vancil who had a shining debut against WNY last week. Forbes was the starting goalkeeper for the 2011 WPSL and 2012 WPSL Elite Red Stars teams.
After the Portland road-trip, the team will be back home against the Boston Breakers on Sunday, June 9th, 3pm CT. Tickets are available for the June 9th match by visiting here or calling 773-697-8699.
