Chicago, IL – The Red Stars continue their fight for the final playoff spot when they meet Washington Spirit on Wednesday night at the Maryland Soccerplex at 7:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. CT.
While Washington (1-4-14, 7 pts) has been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, the Red Stars (7-5-7, 26 pts) have been chipping away game-by-game in an effort to keep hopes alive. The team is coming off a good two-game stretch after tying the Thorns in Portland 3-3 in a FOX Soccer featured match thanks to two goals by midfielder Alyssa Mautz, who subbed in for injured captain Lori Chalupny, and another goal from midfielder Julianne Sitch. The team came back to Chicago and defeated Seattle 3-1 on Saturday, with a German flurry of goals: two from forward Inka Grings and a penalty conversion by defender Sonja Fuss.
The Red Stars will be playing their second match without the injured Chalupny, who suffered a hard tackle in Portland that has left her sidelined with an undisclosed ankle injury. Also missing from this trip are Shannon Boxx, Zakiya Bywaters, and Taryn Hemmings, all out with knee injuries.
Washington has struggled to put points on the board this season, but will be looking to end the year on a high note against the must-win Red Stars. They are led by Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson and USWNT players Ashlyn Harris, Ali Krieger and Lori Lindsey. Krieger has been missing from action due to concussion symptoms but is expected to play tomorrow.
The Red Stars will return to Chicago for their final home game of the season against Sky Blue FC on Saturday, August 10, at 6 p.m. The game will mark fan appreciation night and will include many giveaways, prizes, contests, and a silent jersey auction.
