Red Stars in D.C. to Meet Spirit for First Time

Chicago, Il. – Hoping to capitalize on their 4th of July victory over the Western New York Flash, the Red Stars will take on the last-place Washington Spirit tomorrow evening at the Maryland Soccerplex Stadium.

Chicago (4-6-3, 15 pts), put an end to WNY’s nine-game unbeaten streak, defeating the Flash in a physical 1-0 match last week. Captain Lori Chalupny recorded the game’s only goal, a well-placed deflection shot early in the second half. The game-winning goal would mark Chalupny’s fourth of the season and carry Chicago into its fourth victory. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod kept the clean sheet against a high-powered offense that included Abby Wambach.

With the win, the Red Stars are a mere four points behind the fifth-place Boston Breakers and seven points out of the NWSL playoffs.

With the Red Stars a solid two places ahead of the Spirit, the coming match will be Chicago’s first of three games against the D.C. team. Notable Spirit players include UWSNT goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris, defender Ali Krieger, and midfielder Lori Lindsey as well as Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson, who has put away four of the Spirit’s nine goals scored this season. New additions to the Spirit can also be found in former Seattle forward Lindsay Taylor, who was recently acquired in a trade with Reign FC, and new head coach Mark Parsons, who will be coaching his third match with the Spirit’s pro team.

The Washington Spirit (1-8-4, 7 pts) dropped their most recent match against the first-place Sky Blue FC in New Jersey, a close 0-1 affair.

Chicago Red Stars v Washington Spirit kicks off tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 CT) at the Maryland Soccerplex Stadium in Boyds Md., and will be streamed live online. Fans can also follow the Red Stars Twitter account for live in-game updates: @chicagoredstars.

After this match the Red Stars will return home for a 2-game grandstand, starting on Sunday, July 14 at 3 p.m. CT v FC Kansas City and followed by a rematch with the Spirit on Saturday, July 20 at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available for both matches by visiting chicagoredstars.com.
