Red Stars in Australia: Gilliland Nets First Goal for Newcastle

Gilliland and Hoy earn first win

CHICAGO – With Adelaide United in its bye week, five Red Stars took the field in Round 2 of the W-League as defender Arin Gilliland found her first goal of the season.

In Saturday’s first match, Perth Glory took on Brisbane Roar in what would be a heated game, that would end in a scoreless draw. Vanessa DiBernardo and Alyssa Mautz earned the start for Perth. Mautz proved to be an offensive threat, creating multiple shots on frame, but huge saves by Mackenzie Arnold would keep the Glory scoreless. As Chicago’s three-time leading assister, DiBernardo kept her trade up abroad as she executed several perfectly placed balls for scoring opportunities, but ultimately neither team would be able to finish with a goal.

The final match of Round 2 would finish with Gilliland and Jen Hoy of the Newcastle Jets taking on Sam Johnson of Melbourne Victory. The Jets dominated the game in scoring fashion, defeating Melbourne Victory 4-0, helping themselves move into the coveted top four. Already up 1-0 in the first eight minutes, Gilliland doubled the lead off a corner kick in the 14th minute, heading the ball past Victory’s goalkeeper. Hoy was able to provide two shots for the Jets, but managed to send them just wide.

Adelaide United, with the Red Stars trio of Danielle Colaprico, Sofia Huerta and Katie Naughton, had a bye this week.

Round 3:
Newcastle Jets (1-1-0) vs. Perth Glory (1-0-1)
