Huerta earns first assist
CHICAGO – During the opening weekend of the Australian W-League, all eight Red Stars saw the field and made valuable contributions to their respective teams.
It didn’t take long for Red Stars to clash over in the W-League, as Danielle Colaprico, Sofia Huerta and Katie Naughton of Adelaide United and Samantha Johnson of Melbourne Victory faced each other on Sunday. Naughton nearly put Adelaide on top in the first few minutes with a header just going wide of the net. Colaprico and Huerta were able to combine efforts to assist Adriana Jones with her goal, as Huerta ended up earning her first assist of her W-League career. On the opposite side, Johnson contributed to keeping the scoreline level after a pair of early goals from Adelaide. The two teams ended the match tied, 3-3.
Arin Gilliland and Jen Hoy started for the Newcastle Jets against reigning W-League champions, Melbourne City. Gilliland and Hoy tallied for seven of the 12 shots for Newcastle, including a header from Gilliland that sailed just off the frame.
