Red Stars Heading Into Kansas City Series

Chicago, Il. – Coming off their second win in a row, the Red Stars aim to topple fourth-place Kansas City during the teams’ two-game series which begins tonight at the Village of Lisle – Benedictine University Sports Complex at 6:30 p.m. and continues Sunday in Kansas City at 3 p.m.

Having defeated the Boston Breakers at home 1-0 and Portland Thorns FC at Jeld-Wen Stadium 2-0, the Red Stars (2-4-2, 8 pts) look primed to take on FCKC, who are only two places ahead of them in league standings. Kansas City (4-3-1, 13 pts) recorded a win over the last place Seattle Reign on Sunday on the back of a goal by midfielder Erika Tymrak.

Both teams will have absent players due to US and Canadian National Team call-ups. Canada has called up starting goalkeeper Erin McLeod and defender Carmelina Moscato from the Red Stars. Kansas City defenders Desiree Scott and Lauren Sesselmann will join them from Kansas City. For their two games against the Korea Republic, the USWNT will take ‘keeper Nicole Barnhart, defender Becky Sauerbrunn, and midfielders Lauren Cheney and Kristie Mewis from FCKC. The Blues may also be missing injured forward Renae Cuéllar, who has four goals in league play.

Despite missing McLeod, Chicago will bring the heat in goal with rookie ‘keeper Taylor Vancil, who has proved herself in the net with a shut-out against Portland two weeks ago and a narrow loss to the Western New York Flash the week before that in her spectacular rookie debut. The Red Stars will be calling up amateur goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire for both matches. Devonshire is familiar with the Red Stars, having served as a back-up goalkeeper during their 2012 WPSL Elite campaign.

Chicago currently has two players on the injured reserve list, including USWNT player Shannon Boxx, who underwent minor knee surgery last month. Zakiya Bywaters has joined her after suffering an MCL strain during the Red Stars win in Portland on June 1.

The Red Stars have also officially signed their fourth round draft pick, Princeton forward Jen Hoy. Hoy joined the team during preseason but had to return to finish her studies at Princeton. Hoy was a prolific goal-scorer at Princeton, notching 18 goals in her senior season en route to Ivy League Player of the Year honors. With the addition of Hoy, the Red Stars now have signed all four of their 2013 college draft picks, including Bywaters, Quon, and Vancil.

Red Stars vs. FC Kansas City kicks off tonight at 6:30 pm CT at the Village of Lisle – Benedictine University Sports Complex, and will be streamed live, for free, from chicagoredstars.com. Fans can also follow the Red Stars Facebook and Twitter accounts for live in-game updates: @chicagoredstars.
