Red Stars Face Sky Blue FC in Final Home Match Saturday

Chicago, IL  – The Red Stars return home to the Village of Lisle – Benedictine Sports Complex Saturday, August 10, 6 p.m. to face Sky Blue FC in their home season finale. It will be the two teams’ second meeting of the year and New Jersey’s only Chicago visit.

In the previous meeting in New Jersey back on May 8th, the Red Stars made a stoppage-time comeback to steal a point in a 1-1 draw. Sky Blue’s Canadian midfielder Sophie Schmidt put the home side up 1-0 in the 88th minute with a header goal, but the Red Stars came back just 4 minutes later when midfielder Alyssa Mautz lobbed a shot over Jersey GK Brittany Cameron to even the game.

Since then Sky Blue went on to maintain the top spot as league-leaders, but are currently in a 3-way tie for 2nd place with a 10-6-4 record good for 34 points. They have secured a spot in the 4-team NWSL playoffs. They feature USWNT players Jill Loyden, Kelley O’Hara and Christie Rampone, as well as Australian international forward Lisa DeVanna.

The Red Stars are coming off a devastating loss in Washington D.C. Wednesday night after a bizarre weather delay that saw the game end after only 80:04 was played. The Spirit were holding onto a 1-0 lead in a game that the Red Stars had to win to keep playoff hopes alive. The Red Stars have been known on several occasions this year to come back from behind and perform late-game heroics, so it was a rough way to end a season’s hopes.

The Red Stars continue to play without USWNT midfielder Shannon Boxx, who has been sidelined most of the season after having knee surgery, as well as captain Lori Chalupny who has missed the last two matches after suffering a hard tackle to her left ankle in Portland. Zakiya Bywaters and Taryn Hemmings are also out due to knee injuries.

Saturday’s game will mark Fan Appreciation Day as the Red Stars conclude their 2013 home matches for the year. It will be filled with in-game prizes including signed items and official merchandise. Also back by popular demand is the game-worn player jersey auction. Throughout the match fans will have an opportunity to place a silent bid on any of the Red Stars jerseys of players that are present. Winning bidders will get the game-worn jersey as well as a meet and greet with their player post-game. Any fans wishing to place an absentee bid can do so to [email protected] by 3 p.m. CT Saturday. Please include the player name, and maximum bid amount. If not present, the jerseys can be shipped to the winning bidder. Bidding starts at $50.

One match will remain after Saturday when Chicago heads to KC on Sunday, August 18, for a 3:10 p.m. CT kickoff against another playoff bound team in FC Kansas City.
