Chicago, IL – The Red Stars aim to take their success against Seattle to the road when they face Seattle Reign FC tonight Sunday, July 20, at 4:00 p.m. PT / 6:00 p.m. CT. This will be the final time the two teams meet during the regular season.
The Red Stars (7-6-5, 26pts) once again came from behind late in the game to force a 1-1 draw against Portland Thorns FC on Thursday. Thorns FC forward Jess McDonald scored for the Thorns in 33 seconds of play, but Red Stars captain Lori Chalupny evened the score in the 77th minute. All three matches between the two teams this season resulted in a draw. Despite even records, the Red Stars still trail the Thorns for the final playoff spot based on goal difference. The team faces Seattle with hopes of moving ahead of the Thorns into a playoff position.
Seattle Reign FC (13-1-3, 42pts) looks to become the first team to secure a 2014 NWSL Playoff berth when they face the Red Stars. The team can secure a spot in the playoffs with either a win or a draw on Sunday. Seattle will have six opportunities to earn one point in order to clinch a spot, after facing the Red Stars. Reign FC is coming off a week of rest after suffering a 1-0 shutout to the Red Stars on July 12. The loss to the Red Stars was the Reign’s first loss of the season and remains the only loss thus far.
The series between the Red Stars and Reign FC is currently split after a 3-1 loss in Seattle on June 7 and the recent 1-0 home victory to the Red Stars on July 12. The Red Stars are focused on becoming the first team to win a regular season series against Seattle this season and remain a playoff contender.
