Chicago, IL – The Red Stars are entering their third match of the week to face FC Kansas City in a #2 v #3 showdown on Saturday, June 21, at 7:00 p.m. CT at Verizon Wireless Field at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
The Red Stars (6-5-2, 20pts) aim to earn their first win in the month of June. The team is currently on a four-game winless streak, most recently being a 0-2 shutout against Western New York Flash in Rochester Wednesday night. The Red Stars found themselves down early with a goal by Flash defender Brittany Taylor in the 2nd minute. A goal by Sam Kerr in the 91st minute sealed the deal for the Flash in a match where the Red Stars never seemed to find their legs.
Defender Samantha Johnson was injured during the match in 35th minute when she was caught by a WNY player’s cleat to the face. Johnson left the game to receive stitches and did not return. She will remain out for this match and her return date is unknown at this time. Reinforcements are coming for the Red Stars though as Canadian National team members Adriana Leon and Karina LeBlanc rejoin the team, as well as U.S. Women’s National Team members Christen Press and Julie Johnston. The Canadians lost a 2-1 match to Germany in Vancouver on Wednesday night, while the Americans played in two matches against the French, a 1-0 win and 2-2 draw. Missing Saturday night will be NZ captain Abby Erceg, who just completed two games against Brazil in New Zealand last week, both draws.
FC Kansas City (7-4-3, 24pts) returns home after winning a 2-1 thriller over the Houston Dash on June 14. Two rookies were the deciding factor for the Blues. Jenna Richmond scored the first goal of her professional career and Frances Silva scored her second professional goal in the final seconds of the game. Kansas City is now on a four-game win streak and is undefeated in the past six contests. The match against the Red Stars is the first of a two-game home stand for Kansas City.
This will be the second and final time the Red Stars make the trip to Kansas City in the regular season. In the previous meeting the Red Stars dropped a 1-0 result April 30. Kansas City’s Amy Rodriguez scored the lone goal in the 9th minute. The Red Stars are hoping to steal three points on the road to come within one point of Kansas City in the NWSL standings.
Adding insult to an already challenging week, the Red Stars were grounded in Rochester after all flights were cancelled Thursday, affecting their travel to Kansas City. After this grueling week, the Red Stars will be off until they head to Portland on the 4th of July.
