Red Stars Drop Road Match in Boston

Somerville, MA (May 4, 2013) – On their first road match of the year, the Red Stars found themselves with an early deficit after 2 first-half Breakers goals. In spite of earning back a goal early in the second-half, the Breakers would respond with another 2 tallies on the back of Sydney Leroux to take a commanding 4-1 victory.

Breakers first-half goals were scored by forward Katie Schoepfer in the 20th minute, assisted by Lianne Sanderson, and by a Leroux header from a Heather O’Reilly corner kick in the 26th minute. It would be the first of 3 goals scored by the USWNT forward on the night.

The Red Stars would come out strong in the second half and nearly put one away off a 52nd minute corner kick, but Boston goalkeeper Ashley Phillips made a quick-reaction save to keep Chicago off the board. A few minutes later, Red Stars goalkeeper Erin McLeod would make a theatric save of her own blocking a Mariah Nogueira header.

Finally in the 61st minute the Red Stars were given new-life when midfielder Zakiya Bywaters blasted one home from team captain Lori Chalupny’s assist. But Leroux responded with 2 more of her own to seal the match for the Breakers. She took advantage of a Red Stars defensive error in the 74th minute to breakaway for a 1-on-1 with Red Stars goalkeeper Erin McLeod. She sent the ball low into the net to put the Breakers on top 3-1. Just 10 minutes later she would do the same and seal the Breakers 4-1 victory.

“It was disappointing to concede the two early goals as quick as we did,” stated Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames. “Many of the goals we’re giving up are the direct result of mistakes we make, but as we continue to grow and get players experience at this level those mistakes will correct themselves.”

The Breakers advance to 2-1-0 on the year while the Red Stars fall to 0-1-2. In just four days time, the Red Stars will travel to New Jersey to take on Sky Blue FC on Wednesday, May 8, 7pm ET. They return home for a rematch against Portland on May 12 at 5pm CT.
