CHICAGO – With under a month of play still to go, the Newcastle Jets sit in second place after a 2-2 draw, while Adelaide United is dropped from playoff contention after falling 1-6 this past weekend.
In the first 27 minutes, Newcastle were down 2-0 to Sydney FC. The first goal came in the 20th minute from Kylie Ledbrook, with the second goal coming seven minutes later by Princess Ibini.
But the Jets quickly made up some ground as Emily van Egmond scored a penalty before halftime to shrink Sydney’s lead by one.
It came down to the final minute of action as Gema Simon notched the game-tying equalizer, rewarding Newcastle a point. Arin Gilliland and the Jets sit with 17 points, four behind front-runners Brisbane Roar.
In the weekend’s final match up, Adelaide dropped early in the match after Ellie Carpenter gave Canberra United the lead in the third minute. But it was Red Stars midfielder Alyssa Mautz who brought Adelaide back in the game with her equalizer in the 10th minute.
Unfortunately, that would be the final goal for Adelaide, as Canberra would score five unanswered goals, including a hat trick from Elise Thorsnes.
