CHICAGO – During Round 2 of play in Australia’s W-League, Arin Gilliland scored her first goal of the season, while Danielle Colaprico, Alyssa Mautz and Katie Naughton played the entire match in Adelaide’s opening game.
Newcastle Jets continued its strong start to the season with a 2-0 win against Sydney FC at home. In just the first two minutes, the Jets took the lead as Nicola Orgill found the bottom right corner of the net with the assist from Jenna Kingsley.
In the 29th minute, Gilliland struck the ball from the center of the box to put it past the goalkeeper, tallying her first goal of the season and sealing the 2-0 victory for Newcastle.
After a bye in Round 1, three Red Stars played their first game of the W-League season against Western Sydney Wanderers, resulting in a 2-1 loss. Colaprico received the start in the midfield, while Mautz and Naughton earned a start on the backline.
Western Sydney earned the first goal in the 13th minute from Lo’eau LaBonta. Nearly 10 minutes later, Adelaide countered as Makenzy Doniak equalized.
The match continued in a 1-1 draw, but the Wanderers broke the tie in second half stoppage time as Rosie Sutton tallied the game-winning goal.
