CHICAGO – In Round 8 action, the Newcastle Jets found themselves clawing back to a 3-3 draw against Perth Glory in the final seconds of the match, while Adelaide United fell a goal short in the second half of a 1-2 defeat against Western Sydney Wanderers.
Red Stars defender Arin Gilliland scored the lone first-half goal in the 30th minute, her fourth of the season. It seemed to be enough until the final 15 minutes of the match.
Glory’s Sam Kerr equalized in the 75th and gave her side the lead just five minutes later. Jets’ Katie Stengel found Newcastle’s equalizer minutes later. Kerr sealed a hat trick in just nine minutes by scoring her third goal with six minutes remaining in the match. Newcastle was given the final goal after an unfortunate own goal by Perth’s Sarah Carroll.
Newcastle bumped up to third place with 13 points, separating from the fourth place team by one point.
Adelaide United took its fourth loss in five games, continuing their spot on that bottom of the ladder.
The opening goal came in the 23rd minute as Marlous Pieete gave Western Sydney the lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Adelaide’s Makenzy Doniak found the equalizer with the assist by Laura Johns.
With 20 minutes to go, the Wanderers took back their one-goal lead as Lee Falkon found the back of the net.
Red Stars midfielder Alyssa Mautz was able to get all three of her shots on goal, but none were able to make the difference Adelaide needed to get their second win.
