CHICAGO – In Round 3 action of the W-League this past weekend, Adelaide United saw their first victory of the season against front-runners Perth Glory, while Newcastle Jets fell for the first time to Melbourne City FC.
Danielle Colaprico, Alyssa Mautz and Katie Naughton all saw a full 90 minutes in Adelaide’s 3-1 victory against first place Perth. Adelaide went into halftime with a 2-0 lead, with both goals from Makezy Doniak, on loan from North Carolina Courage. Perth was able to draw the scoreline to one as Adelaide’s Emma Checker scored an own goal, but Doniak completed a hat trick to give her team a massive win in the W-League.
Mautz and Naughton each had 56 touches, playing the ball out of the backfield for majority of the match. Meanwhile, Colaprico stepped up in the midfield, intercepting a game-high six balls to keep Perth from creating any type of attacking danger.
With the win, Adelaide moved up to fifth in the standings with three points.
Arin Gilliland earned the full 90 minutes while the Newcastle Jets were handed their first loss of the season, in a 5-2 defeat against Melbourne City FC.
Melbourne’s Kyah Simon struck first in the fifth minute, but Newcastle quickly countered 10 minutes later with a brace by Katie Stengel to take the lead. In the second half, Melbourne’s Larissa Crummer and Jess Fishlock each earned a brace for the win.
Newcastle dropped to third in standings, just behind Melbourne and Perth.
