Red Stars Down Notre Dame 3-1 Ahead of NWSL Season Opener

CHICAGO – In the Red Stars final preseason match up, Chicago defeated Notre Dame 3-1.

Just moments into the game, Chicago found the back of the net after Jen Hoy crossed a perfect ball to Summer Green, who finished with ease, marking her first preseason goal.

Chicago quickly doubled their lead off a corner kick that led to a scramble in the box. Amid the chaos, defender Arin Gilliland headed a bouncing ball, slipping past the Notre Dame goalkeeper, which allowed the Red Stars to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

At the start of the second half, Notre Dame was ready to fight back. The Irish’s spacing in the midfield helped them gain enough time to hit a perfectly struck ball, finding the upper net to put Notre Dame on the board.

Midfielder Danielle Colaprico split the Notre Dame backline to find Sofia Huerta, but her shot just missed, hitting the post and bouncing out. Chicago continued to press Notre Dame, but the Red Stars couldn’t finish their chances.

The Red Stars finally executed in the final minute off a corner kick when Courtney Raetzman found the head of Notre Dame alum Katie Naughton, who placed it perfectly and ended the match with a final 3-1 score.

Chicago will head into the 2017 NWSL season against Houston Dash on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. CT at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.
