Red Stars Blank Northwestern in Preseason Opener

CHICAGO – The Chicago Red Stars kicked off their first open preseason game on Sunday evening with an impressive 5-0 win over Northwestern University. Fans packed into the stands and Chicago Local 134 brought their drums to the Northwestern Lakeside Field to support the Red Stars. Fans in attendance received a special reveal as the Red Stars wore their new secondary kits for the first time in the 2016 season.

Chicago began the match confidently, controlling possession throughout the first half and creating plenty of chances. Jen Hoy, entering her fourth year with the Red Stars, opened the game up with two first half goals and constant pressure in the Northwestern final third. Hoy’s evening was finished at halftime but Red Stars Head Coach Rory Dames was happy with the creation and finishing that his forward displayed.

“There were certain areas that we wanted to put some work into tonight,” said Dames. “I think we got better as the game went on. The first half was very slow and methodical and we needed to find a little bit quicker tempo to be able to break the lines a little faster. As we played on in the first half we got a little better.”

The Red Stars continued with their progression in the second half and produced three more goals. Two from Sofia Huerta, including an upper-90 bullet from the top of the box, and one from Alyssa Mautz in the final 5 minutes of the match.

Three goals scored in the Red Stars second half, including Huerta’s upper-v strike.

“We were able to go forward more and look to be a bit more dangerous and take some more chances,” said Dames of the second half play. “It is always good when your forwards are scoring. If your forwards are getting around the goal, creating chances and finishing, that is always a good thing.”

With the final roster cut one week away, the coaching staff has one more preseason game to evaluate the team. The Red Stars head on the road to take on Division-I powerhouse Notre Dame this Wednesday at 6 p.m. (Eastern) in South Bend to close out preseason.

“We are playing a very good Notre Dame team at their place, so it will probably present a little more questions from us defensively,” said Dames.
