Honored for standout play in dramatic win over Seattle
Chicago, Illinois – Chicago Red Stars forward Christen Press was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 2 of the 2015 season. Press bagged a brace in Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 home win over Seattle Reign FC, including the decisive goal in second-half stoppage time. The U.S. Women’s National Team star also earned an assist on Jen Hoy’s tap-in before the break.
Forward Press scored her first goal of the game in the 32nd minute off Vanessa DiBernardo’s delicate header in behind the defense, leveling the match at 1-1. The Red Stars continued to put pressure on the visitors and took the lead a mere three minutes later, as Hoy benefited from Press’ excellent centering ball from the left side of the penalty area.
With neither team able to find the net in second-half regulation time, the match appeared destined to end in a 2-2 draw. Press had other plans, however, as she sprinted on to a bouncing ball off the foot of Hoy and exploded past the opposition backline before slotting past helpless Seattle goalkeeper Hope Solo for a spectacular 91st-minute game-winner.
California native Press is the third Red Stars player to be named NWSL Player of the Week, as team captain Lori Chalupny was honored after Week 10 of the 2013 season and forward Jen Hoy won the voting for Week 19 of the same campaign.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists who cover the league on a consistent basis.
The Chicago Red Stars hope to make it consecutive wins to start the season when they host high-flying Portland Thorns FC on April 25. Single-game and season tickets for the 2015 Red Stars campaign may be purchased by clicking here or by calling 773-698-6001.
